March 17, 2008 – Continue Reading BelowDelia’s cape $34, Chloe skirt $985, Nine West shoes $89, Banana Republic scarf $39, Banana Republic cuff $38This weekend as I strolled along on my usual AM route to the gym, I was captivated by all the new new spring digs gracing storefronts. We’ve already been friends for a while- me and spring clothes, that is- since September’s unveiling at fashion week to be exact…so we’ve known each other for a while- but only from a distance and now they finally appear for our first face to face meeting- up close and personal…staring back at me separated by only one pane of glass (sorry, what? Oh, oh, oh…”sorry! i didn’t realize” – just got wrapped up in the moment..i mouth back to the security guard inside the Chloe boutique…of course I’ll remove my face pressed up against the glass from your storefront window…that can’t be good for business- yes, yes..i totally understand. I wave longingly to a mini skirt in bright red and black brushstokes- wanting desperately for it to join my friends back in a tiny West village apt- the HQ for closet Ahmed-Yahia. Despite my down jacket and massive scarf, looking at bare legged mannequins sporting art inspired mini’s and lightweight silk tank dresses makes you long for the days when only one layer is necessary to brave the outdoors. March is the month when you feel like it should be getting warmer. It’s a whole month of “the night before the first day of school” anticipation ( I actually liked school- I know I’m a nerd)…all summer you waited and now its so close you can feel it. As I walked through the farmers market in the center of the city on my way home I happily noted spring arrival with the first crop of spring flowers. In the spirit I even bought a huge purple hydrangea (I love plants but they have yet to return that sentiment- unless you include a slow, sad loss of leaves until there is only one little guy hanging on- yet I continue to faithfully water it and hold my breath when passing by it thinking maybe- just maybe that guy will sprout a family member). Buying a plant is like going to the doctor. You want to be completely honest when they ask you all the interrogational questions but somehow you can never actually tell them the full truth (a.k.a.”how many drinks you consume in a week…standard response- “oh,you know…3 or 4”) ( in my head- “a night”) …geez. note to self. start detox asap. The plant man saw me eying the hydrangea, when he asked, “How much sunlight does your apartment get”. As soon as he said it I knew for sure I had chosen the one plant that needs to live in a Jamaica-like climate, with direct sunlight 23 out of the 24 hours. “Well… (i answered)…I wouldn’t call it..dir-ect sunlight (lies). The count of Monte Cristo being held captive in a cavernous dungeon and I have more in common than my apartment and sunlight. But strong-willed, as I am, and not willing to let the sight of my admiration go due to mere weather conditions- I decide to make it a deal…when I love something- in the words of Tim Gunn- I “make it work”! – Continue Reading BelowMy savvy shopping has taught me not only the art of justification but also how to choose a strong piece of an outfit as a splurge piece and then accessorize inexpensively around it. Similar to the Chloe skirt as my outfit splurge. I struck a deal with my new hydrangea- while there will be no island sun canada goose , blooming garden beds or frequent fertilization treats…I can promise close proximity to a window that actually opens, a partial view of the Empire state building from the back North corner of my fire escape and eventually a slightly larger pot.
