A group calling itself “Sicurium” has filed with Brazil’s Supreme Court a petition seeking to take its fight to the next level, filing an objection in opposition to the government’s latest budget on the grounds that it failed to reach its debt obligation targets.

The group alleges that a large amount of money was siphoned off from the budget by government officials and says it may appeal against the decision, if an actual review is ordered.

“I am disappointed, a decision has not been taken yet, but in this situation we will fight and if a review is ordered we will go to the Supreme Court, I would expect there will be a clear ruling,” said Brazil’s justice minister, Raul Montesano, who introduced the budget.

“That is the reason behind the action of this group of people [Sicurium], because we need a positive response from the Brazilian government to the problems of people.”

While it is not the first time that the group has had its day in the sun, which it claims is due to a series of errors by the government, the latest action, in the context of Brazil’s economic crisis is an unusual one.

A spokesperson for the organisation said that the group’s objection was filed on the grounds that the budget was not passed by the full Senate and its authors were not even members of the chamber, but rather had received funding from a “non-governmental” group which is not in line with Brazil’s constitution.
